Cinnamon Apples

Ever since our trip to Mercier Orchards, we have had a peck of apples sitting on our cool basement floor. Every year it becomes more and more challenging to figure out how to use all the apples. Halfway through the peck usually my husband says, “no more apples!”

Cinnamon Apples is the first of many recipes in the Sweet Home Georgia apple series.

Ingredients:

6 Tart Apples, cored, peeled, and sliced
3 Tablespoons Boiled Cider, optional
1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar (more or less depending on sweetness of apples)
1/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
1/8 Teaspoon Freshly Ground Nutmeg
3 Tablespoons Cornstarch
4 Tablespoons Butter, sliced

Boiled Apple Cider

Boiled Cider: Boiled cider is something I learned about from the King Arthur Flour Blog. It’s actually apple cider that has been boiled into a thick syrup. This syrup adds an intense apple flavor to any recipe.

Vietnamese Cinnamon

Vietnamese Cinnamon: When using cinnamon for baking, I always make sure to use Vietnamese cinnamon for its extra spicy and bold flavor. Note: For prepping the apples I use a 12-wedge slicer/corer. I find the 12-wedge thickness to be perfect for apple pies and desserts.

  • Combine all ingredients except butter in crockpot.
  • Stir well to coat all apple pieces.
  • Place slices of butter on top.

Step 2: Cooking Instructions

Cook on High for 1.5 to 2 hours or cook on low for 3.5 to 4 hours. Stir once halfway through the cooking time. I recommend trying the apples at the lower end of the cooking time to check for doneness.  I tend to like my apples more firm than soft, so usually I cook the apples on low for 3.5 hours.

So I must admit the first time I made this recipe, I decided to let the apples cook on low overnight since my crockpot automatically turns off. That did not turn out well at all. The apples were mushy and soft. Luckily, my 11 month-old son loved them.

When I made the recipe again I followed the cooking time exactly and the apples came out just the way I like them.
